Best Beginner Guitar | Ultimate Guitar Comparison Guide!

Welcome to the guide for comparing the best beginner guitars available on the market!

My name is Josh and I’ve been playing the guitar for over 20 years now. I’ve owned numerous guitars over that time and even spent time at a “big box” music store selling music equipment. I don’t consider myself THE expert, but I have learned a lot during that time.

Maybe you’ve never picked up a guitar before or perhaps you’ve been playing for a few years – but you’re reading this because you’re looking to find the best beginner guitar for your budget.

That’s where these interactive beginner guitar buying guides come in handy. I hope they will help you decide which features you want most in a guitar and how much you should expect to pay for them. I’m also working to provide great tips on how to purchase and care for your new guitar.

Best Beginner Guitar: Acoustic, Electric, or Classical?

This is the #1 question I hear people ask when they are buying a new guitar. Sometimes you already know, sometimes you don’t (especially if you’re buying for somebody else).

For those who don’t, it’s good to ask yourself a few questions:

  1.  Do I have caluses? Caluses are what are formed on the tip of your finger after playing for a while. If you’re a true beginner, your fingers might thank you if you choose a classical or electric guitar to start. Acoustic strings are a higher gauge and therefore more painful for beginners learning to play.
  2. Am I willing to buy more equipment? The hollow body of acoustic guitars and classical guitars produce great sound that doesn’t require amplification. Electric guitars, on the other hand, force you to purchase an amplifier and chord and then you’ll want to get pedals, more cables, etc. It gets expensive!
  3. Do I like finger picking style of playing? Both the acoustic and classical guitars are well-suited for the finger picking style of playing. You can do it with electric guitars but it sounds much better to use a pick.
  4. What kind of sound do I want? Each of these three types of guitars produce entirely different sounds. Look at your music collection and see what you listen to most. Hard rock? Then pick up an electric guitar. Is it Country? Then grab an acoustic guitar. Do you like classical music? Then you might consider the classical guitar.
