In the video, guitarist Nate Savage does an excellent job in covering the basics for learning proper picking techniques to get you going. Working with these general tips will greatly increase your playing ability.
First of all, you need to choose a pick that works for you, this variety pack is a smart choice. It gives you 60 picks in 5 sizes (0.6mm, 0.73mm, 0.88mm, 1mm and 1.14mm) and range from thin to heavy gauge. Start off with a medium pick at first until you start feeling comfortable with the picking technique. As you practice and start trying out the other sizes you will develop a feel for which size is right for you.
As you work on your technique remember to relax, playing tensed up will affect your efficiency. Shake it out and start fresh or whatever it takes, being as relaxed as possible is a great way to avoid injury. It all comes down to how your style, be sure to play with your wrist instead of locking it and playing with your elbow. Refrain from using large sweeping motions and simply pick the string enough to play it, smaller motions are much more efficient.
Your pick grip and pick angle are something that you will really tune in as you get better. Keep practicing until you feel comfortable before adding styles. There is no right or wrong way, you just have to find what works for you.
Finally, learning takes time. The most important thing to remember is to relax and have fun with it.
