Learning different scales, such as the minor pentatonic scales, can be a really quick way to learn your way around the fretboard. By practicing scales, your fingers will become more fluent with chord changes as well as location of each note which is vital to learning new specific songs and riffs.

If you are learning how to play scales, minor pentatonic scales are a fun place to start.

There are 5 positions in the minor pentatonic scales.  By mastering each one before moving to the next you will gradually start to get the hang of it.  You will feel accomplished when you finally master it. There are a few scales that you can print out that are helpful for anyone just starting included in the video below.

In the video he recommends setting your guitar aside and essentially memorizing each note and imagining yourself playing them.  This is the way the I learned as well.
